Saudi Pro League Round 5 Review

Season 2026/27

Round 5

A three-point lead, a five-goal win, and nine clean sheets

Al Hilal finished Saudi Pro League round 5 with 15 points and a three-point lead after Al Ittihad beat Al Nassr 2–1. Across all nine matches, 20 goals and nine team clean sheets tell a more uneven scoring story than the headline average of 2.22 goals per game suggests.

This review covers the completed 2026/27 round played on 3–5 September, not the later matches now reflected in the league standings. Every result below has been checked against the official league match centre, while the round totals are our calculations from those nine final scores.

The complete round: six wins, three draws, no missing fixtures

Saudi Pro League round 5 ended with three home wins, three away wins and three draws, so there was no advantage for either venue category in the number of victories. The balance in outcomes matters because the home teams scored more goals, but that scoring difference did not translate into more wins.

Al Ahli’s five goals supplied the largest single contribution, with NEOM adding three in another home victory. Those two results alone account for eight of the round’s 20 goals, which is why a round-wide average needs to be read alongside the full distribution.

The results table covers all 18 clubs, including the two scoreless draws on the final day. The official match centre marks all nine fixtures as completed; there is no postponed or unplayed fixture being treated as a final result in this review.

Home team Final score Away team
Al Fayha 2–2 Al Kholood
NEOM 3–0 Al Khaleej
Diriyah 0–2 Al Qadsiah
Abha 0–1 Al Ettifaq
Al Ahli 5–0 Al Riyadh
Al Shabab 0–2 Al Hilal
Al Faisaly 0–0 Al Hazem
Al Taawoun 0–0 Al Fateh
Al Ittihad 2–1 Al Nassr

Twenty goals, but only two matches reached four or more

The scoring average for Saudi Pro League round 5 is 20 divided by nine, or 2.22 when rounded to two decimal places. That figure describes the whole round, but it does not mean that most games contained approximately the same number of goals.

Two matches finished without a goal, and Abha’s meeting with Al Ettifaq contained only one. At the opposite end, Al Ahli–Al Riyadh contained five and Al Fayha–Al Kholood contained four, making those the only games to reach four or more goals.

Saudi Pro League round 5 therefore combined a substantial high-scoring contribution with several low-scoring fixtures. The median match total was two goals, below the mean, because the four-goal and five-goal games pulled the average upward.

Goals in a match Matches Goals contributed
0 2 0
1 1 1
2 2 4
3 2 6
4 1 4
5 1 5
Total 9 20

The two highest-scoring games in Saudi Pro League round 5 contributed nine goals between them, or 45% of the total. That concentration is more informative than calling the entire round high-scoring, since seven of the nine matches stayed below four goals.

In Saudi Pro League round 5, NEOM’s three goals and Al Ahli’s five were the only team totals of three or more. Seven clubs scored at least twice, while nine did not score at all, showing that the round’s goals were concentrated among a relatively small set of contributors.

Al Hilal’s lead and Al Ittihad’s place in the chase

The clearest standings consequence of Saudi Pro League round 5 was the separation between Al Hilal and Al Nassr. Al Hilal’s 2–0 away win at Al Shabab supplied three points, while Al Nassr took none from its visit to Al Ittihad.

The league’s final-day report records Al Hilal first on 15 points, Al Nassr second on 12, Al Qadsiah third on 12 and Al Ittihad fourth on 11. These are the positions and points reported at the round’s close, not values copied from today’s later table.

Elsewhere in Saudi Pro League round 5, Al Qadsiah’s 2–0 win at Diriyah brought it level on points with Al Nassr. It also means that the top-four story cannot be reduced to the Jeddah match alone: an away victory elsewhere helped tighten the contest immediately behind the leader.

Position after Round 5 Club Points Points earned in this round
1 Al Hilal 15 3
2 Al Nassr 12 0
3 Al Qadsiah 12 3
4 Al Ittihad 11 3

Saudi Pro League round 5 left Al Ittihad four points behind Al Hilal but only one behind the two clubs immediately above it. Those gaps describe the standings consequence without assuming that one result establishes a lasting change in title prospects.

Al Nassr scored once in Saudi Pro League round 5, but that was not enough to preserve its perfect opening league record. For Al Ittihad, the same 2–1 result produced the full three-point return against a direct member of the leading group, rather than simply adding to a round goal total.

Nine clean sheets are not nine separate shutout matches

Saudi Pro League round 5 produced nine team clean sheets, meaning nine of the 18 team appearances ended without conceding. Counting teams rather than fixtures is essential here, because a 0–0 draw contributes two clean sheets, not one.

NEOM, Al Qadsiah, Al Ettifaq, Al Ahli and Al Hilal each won without conceding. Al Faisaly, Al Hazem, Al Taawoun and Al Fateh supplied the other four clean sheets through the two scoreless draws.

Five of the six decisive results were therefore wins to nil, with Al Ittihad’s victory the sole exception. This is an outcome-based observation about Saudi Pro League round 5, not a claim about which defence allowed fewer chances or which goalkeeper performed best.

Clean-sheet category Fixtures Team clean sheets
Home win to nil 2 2
Away win to nil 3 3
Scoreless draw 2 4
Other results 2 0
Total 9 9

Seven fixtures had at least one team fail to score, leaving only Al Fayha–Al Kholood and Al Ittihad–Al Nassr with goals from both sides. The difference between seven such fixtures and nine clean sheets follows directly from the double contribution of the scoreless draws.

Saudi Pro League round 5 offers no basis from these scores alone to rank defensive quality or diagnose poor finishing. The safe conclusion is narrower: wins without conceding were common among the successful teams, and half of all team appearances ended with a clean sheet.

The five-goal result did not make this a home-winning round

Al Ahli’s 5–0 victory over Al Riyadh was both the highest-scoring match and the largest winning margin in Saudi Pro League round 5. One club supplied every goal in that fixture, unlike the 2–2 draw in which Al Fayha and Al Kholood split four goals evenly.

That five-goal contribution represented 25% of all round goals, so it materially affected the overall scoring picture. NEOM’s 3–0 win was the next-largest margin, while Al Hilal and Al Qadsiah each won away by two goals.

Home sides scored 12 goals against eight for away sides, a four-goal difference across the nine fixtures. Yet each venue category earned three wins and 12 points, once the three draws are included, so neither home victories nor points were more frequent.

Venue category Goals scored Wins Draws Points earned
Home teams 12 3 3 12
Away teams 8 3 3 12
Combined 20 6 6 team draws 24

This distinction is a useful safeguard when interpreting Saudi Pro League round 5: more goals for the home category did not mean a greater overall points return. The three away wins at Diriyah, Abha and Al Shabab matched the three home wins at NEOM, Al Ahli and Al Ittihad.

Two of the six victories were decided by one goal, two by two goals, one by three and one by five. That spread identifies different result margins without treating a larger scoreline as proof of tactical control, superior chance creation or a deserved result.

The shared points and the practical round summary

Al Fayha and Al Kholood earned a point each from the round’s only scoring draw, whereas the other four draw participants shared points without scoring. Saudi Pro League round 5 thus contained three draws with very different contributions to the goals total, even though each draw distributed the same two league points.

Al Ettifaq’s 1–0 win at Abha also deserves separate recognition, since the round’s lowest-scoring decisive fixture returned the same three points as Al Ahli’s five-goal victory. The points system rewards the win rather than the margin, making that result consequential despite its modest share of the scoring total.

For Saudi Pro League round 5, the nine fixtures distributed 24 points: 18 from six decisive matches and six from three draws. That total is three below the 27 points that nine decisive matches would distribute, with each draw reducing the combined return by one point.

The lasting snapshot of Saudi Pro League round 5 is a three-point lead for Al Hilal, a narrower chase behind it and a scoring total heavily influenced by two fixtures. Equal home and away wins, five victories to nil and two scoreless draws provide the broader context that the biggest-club headlines leave out.
